Behind the Scenes with the GIS Team

Every week, the Geographic Information System (GIS) team plays a critical role in infrastructure protection and public safety through our TX811 data submission workflow. Here's what goes into this essential process:

The team generates updated buffer zones around all TCEC electric utility lines and submits this geospatial data to TX811, Texas's statewide "Call Before You Dig" notification system.

This weekly schedule ensures contractors, excavators, and property owners receive accurate, current information about our electrical infrastructure locations before breaking ground on any project. By maintaining real-time data accuracy with TX811, they help prevent:

  • Accidental utility strikes
  • Unplanned outages affecting our service territory
  • Property damage and costly repairs
  • Serious safety incidents and injuries

While this work happens quietly in the background, it's foundational to TCEC’s operational safety and service reliability. Each submission represents our commitment to protecting infrastructure and the communities we serve.

This is just one of the many ways the GIS team supports TCEC's mission, keeping the lights on safely, one data update at a time.
