Program to Power More Students’ College Journey
Aledo, Texas (September 13, 2024) - Tri-County Electric Cooperative’s (TCEC) Scholarship Program will power more high school students’ college journeys than ever before.
The distribution cooperative announced it would increase the number of annual scholarships it offers from 18 to 50 in 2025, with the total monetary value of the scholarships growing from $54,000 to $250,000.
“We are proud to help illuminate more students’ futures and help fund their dream of going to college,” said Scott Spence, President and CEO of TCEC.
Since 2019, the TCEC Scholarship Program has awarded $300,000 to support the academic journeys of 100 students throughout its 16-county service territory. In 2024, TCEC awarded nine $4,000 scholarships and nine $2,000 scholarships.
The TCEC Scholarship Program is paid for using unclaimed funds, such as capital credit checks that have not been cashed in three years. Texas law permits electric cooperatives to use a portion of these funds for limited purposes, such as scholarships. These dollars would go to the state’s general funds if TCEC did not repurpose them and reinvest the funds back into the local community.
High school seniors who reside with parents or legal guardians who are members of TCEC, are graduating in the spring of 2025, and pursuing an academic degree or certification from an accredited university, college, junior college, or technical school are eligible to apply. The program will begin accepting applications on October 7, 2024. Scholarship applications will be evaluated by an independent third party not affiliated with Tri-County Electric and will be awarded in the spring.
